I just discovered a great blog - Adventures in Vintage Hunting from the oh-so-lucky Rachel, who just thrifted her way across the country, and stopped to interview some Etsy vintage sellers on the way to boot! My favorite find out of all the ones she highlighted?:

Vintage Life Magazine - Coming In 2010!

Holy crap - how am I just seeing this? A new magazine all about vintage - Vintage Life to be exact - a real, hold in your hands magazine too - hooray! It is from the UK, so that makes it a bit pricier to subscribe... but if it is good it will be totally worth it...

They have a Ning network too it looks like - you know I'm joining!

What to do, what to do...

I'm having trouble deciding what to do next weekend. There are two events happening simultaneously - the Country Living Fair and the Springfield Antique Show and Flea Market Extravaganza.

The Country Living Fair is about 5 minutes from my house, but is a hefty $12 to get in, and who knows how much parking will be. One huge perk of going is that my lovely co-blogger on The Vintage List blog, Lisa B., is going to be there - we could do lunch! How fun would that be?

I highly doubt there would be anything there for me to buy for my shops, it would be more of a hang around and drool over stuff kind of event, while taking photos for the blog of course...

The Springfield show, on the other hand, will have a ton of stuff I could buy for my shops (2200 vendors, hello!), and it is only $5 to get in. It is 45 minutes away though, which is a bit of a drag...

I suppose I could do both. But that would mean little or no garage sale shopping, and it is getting to be the end of the season here, so I am feeling the pressure to stockpile for stuff to list over the winter. Garage sales = cheap inventory, which is hard to pass up. The flea market will have some bargains, but more likely I will be spending a bit more than I would at the sales...

Grr. I need two of me. Or maybe three.

I know I am not blogging as often as I used to - and there is a reason, other than the usual "I have no time" excuse...

I'm on Facebook. Here, here, and here. I am on Facebook more often than I am on Twitter these days - and it used to be the other way around! I don't know, it is evil and has its claws in me I guess...

Hocking Hills Antique Barn - Final Report :(

Yep, this weekend me and my stuff left the Barn and hit the highway toward home - toward the big yard sale my parents and I are having this weekend, to be more specific.

It was a hard decision to make, I did like doing it, but the return just wasn't there for me. It's funny, I had to make the decision coming off my best month yet - in July I actually made rent, plus $42.00. But, I knew it wasn't sustainable, so I told them I would move out at the end of August.

I put everything at half off for a week, then at 75% off for the last week. For the whole month of August I sold $61.50. Granted, I didn't add any new items in August, which didn't help, but at 75% off some of that stuff was super cheap and still didn't move! It helped me feel like I made a good decision....

It may be something I try again in the future, maybe somewhere closer. It just wasn't for me right now, but you never know unless you try, right?

Country Home fix with Flea Market Style magazine?

I just discovered that there is a new magazine out called Flea Market Style (from the amazing Ki Nassauer) - will it give us the Country Home flavor we've been missing? I hope so! They have a blog now which is great, but it looks like the mag is only available in stores, I couldn't find an option to subscribe... So, the hunt is on! I'll let you know if I can snag a copy... :)

Update: It looks like they released a test issue this spring, with another new issue set for release next spring... if I hear anything more I will let you all know!

Featured Collectible - Vintage Bathroom Scales

I love it when a theme develops in my treasure hunting adventures - and here is a perfect example. A couple of weeks ago I picked up this vintage bathroom scale at an estate sale:

It's got some wear and tear but told me my weight the exact same as my digital scale at home (though it could have been nice and shaved off a few pounds if it was so inclined!). I hadn't ever bought a bathroom scale to sell before, so I got it to give it a try.

A few days later as I was going through the vintage fashion magazines I got at the same sale, I happened to see this ad:

Be sure you click to view it full size - these have to be the most perfect bathroom scales ever created! Flowers, an owl, a frog, a butterfly, a ladybug, a strawberry, and yes even one that says Hey Fatso - I guess that is supposed to be "motivational"?

Anyway, a quick search for these online only brought two results - the first is from one of my fellow vintage Etsy sellers:

New goodness at auction on eBay - Vintage 70's & 80's Fashion Magazines!

I love finding a huge box of vintage magazines at an estate sale - I always do a secret little happy dance (while trying to look casual, of course) as I scoop it up and run it to the checkout table. Last weekend I found a box of fashion magazines from the 1970's and 1980's - the one on top was this one:

What teenage girl doesn't read Seventeen magazine? If I ever find any of the ones I read back in the early 90's I'll flip. (I would truly die if I found a big box of Sassy magazines though - that was my teenage Bible, and I sold all of them at a yard sale before I went to college, like a total idiot.)

Yeah baby - Glamour magazines - a ton of them! Four of them have Christie Brinkley on the cover - apparently in the mid to late 70's she was Glamour's favorite cover girl.

A dose of cuteness for your Friday...

I was lucky enough to win a pack of completely adorable magnets from one of my favorite Etsy vintage sellers, Gretchen from Shop 66, and they are now gracing the front of my fridge, next to Will's Bone and Futurama magnets:

I marked them with red arrows so you don't miss any of the cuteness. :)

I think the deer is my favorite, followed closely by the skunk - thanks again Gretchen!

The other cuteness you have probably noticed - my brand spankin new Cherries Jubilee blog background from a website I just discovered - The Cutest Blog On The Block. Not only are their backgrounds gorgeous (and free!), they are super easy to install, with no worry that the rest of your blog layout will be screwed up in the process. Antique Barn - June Report

Rent = $115

*sigh*

I had a chat with Max at the Barn about why I'm not selling enough to make rent, let alone anything above rent, during their busiest time of year... Needless to say I am frustrated, and am now officially leaning toward closing up shop at the end of July.

Max said the sellers that do best are in the front of the barn (I'm in the back) and are locals who are able to come in every week and add new items, remove old items, etc. I have neither of these advantages, which is showing in my sales numbers - obviously.

Seeing as how I can't move closer, and getting down there every week with new items isn't something that I am really able to do either... well, like I said, I could be admitting defeat sooner rather than later. :(

Featured Collectible - Midwinter Stonehenge Dinnerware

It's no real secret, if you have read my blog for very long, that I have a bit of an obsession with vintage dinnerware and sell a good bit of it on eBay. I just love finding a pattern or brand that I haven't seen before, and researching - which is really just a code word for drooling over - all the different patterns that the company makes, and wishing I had the space and money to keep at least several hundred different sets of dishes in my house.

I had the luck last weekend to find a small set of Midwinter Stonehenge dishes in the Sun pattern - I had never seen either the brand or the pattern before, but I loved it immediately. How could I not?:

Aren't they just amazing? They are Oh-So-Very-70's - the pattern was made between 1973 and 1986, as a matter of fact. There is a blue version called Moon which is equally awesome:

The serving pieces are too adorable, I wish I would have gotten some with the Sun set I found... Look at this creamer with coffee cups and saucers in the Earth pattern:

Most of their patterns and pattern names have a kind of nature inspired, hippie-esque feel to them, but they avoid the stereotypical garish design in favor of a more subdued, modern look - which makes me love them all the more!

What I think is really neat about the patterns is that a lot of them seem very mix and match - like you could create a set that was made up of Sun, Summer, and Day and it would be really pretty and interesting... There is also an all white pattern that you could use to fill in gaps until you found the patterned piece you were missing - the possibilities seem pretty endless!

There are lots more shapes and patterns than I can talk about here, of course, but I just had to share a few of my favorites! :)
