Merry Christmas from Vintage Goodness!

I hope all you vintage geeks out there have a fab Christmas and a happy New Year! Personally I'm wishing I could go back to Christmas time when I was a kid... Nothing compares to that feeling of super excited anticipation!

Here's me (on the right) with my cousin Heidi, on Santa's lap in 1979 - I was 4 years old. Ahhhh to be a kid again! :)

Here's 2 year old me double fisting some crayons on Christmas with my cousins Heidi and Dawn...

And last but not least, here's my baby brother Darrell with a bow on his head, probably 1979... Merry Christmas! ;)

Dear Santa - My eBay Christmas List

A couple of weeks ago I made Santa a Christmas list via Etsy Treasury. I think I had better make an eBay list for him too - who knows where he prefers to shop? Hopefully both places - I've been really good this year, I swear! :)

(This is on my holy grail list!)

(I have all the the Selected journals, I'm excited to get the complete ones, this is just the first, there are more to come apparently!)

(I need a new purse, this one is fun and looks like it could take a beating...)

(I don't know if I've been quite good enough for these! lol)

(I just finished the 4th book in this series, it has become one of my favorites!)

(I need new curtains for the downstairs, 3 big windows worth.)

(Also on my holy grail list!)

(My favorite Austen movie - if you haven't seen it you should check it out!)

(The Westwood mug I don't have yet.)

(I love love love Harry Clarke, this is kind of rare, with the box and dust jacket!)

I think I've bothered Santa enough now for this year - here's hoping you all get everything on your Christmas lists! :)

And now for something completely different...

I have a bit of news to share today - it's not really Vintage Goodness news though. It is more Mitzi news - in fact, it is so completely Mitzi news that the new blog I am launching is actually at MitziSwisher.com! :) I wrote a lengthy explanation over on the About page of the new site, and I'll go ahead and post it here for you all, to help you decide if this new project is something you might be interested in following along on... I don't blame you if you aren't though - I realize that I am venturing into waters that are fairly far away from my comfortable vintage geek world on this one... ;)

In the spring of 2012, out of sheer curiosity (and after watching one too many episodes of Who Do You Think You Are), I joined Ancestry.com to see what I could find out about my family tree. Little did I know that it was the first step of what now looks to be a very long journey, that will culminate not only in a (hopefully) correct accounting of my genealogy, but also in a historical novel based on the lives of my 5x great grandparents, Ambrose and Ailsey Coffee.

I’ve wanted to write a book since I was a kid, but I never had an idea, never found a story that I felt was mine – and mine alone – to tell. The more I learned about the life that Ambrose Coffee led in the early days of Kentucky, the more interested I got. He came from Ireland as an indentured servant at the age of 12, joined the Virginia Militia, and ended up at Boonesborough, where he fought with the one and only Daniel Boone.

Boonesborough Fort

All that is fascinating enough, but even more interesting, at least to me, is that while I have a first name for his wife, I have no history for her. There are a few theories floating around, but nothing concrete – nothing that can be verified with absolute certainty. While she isn’t the only “brick wall” on my family tree, for some reason she has really captured my imagination – her husband’s life is somewhat well documented, which is a blessing, but her life must have been equally as interesting, yet we have no documentation of it at all (at least not that I have found, as of yet). Other than the fact that she was Ambrose’s wife, and they had 9 children together, she is a mystery.

The little part of me that has always wanted to write a book began to poke me repeatedly.

“There’s a story to tell here, lady! You’ve always loved historical fiction, so here you go, there’s no reason in the world not to do it. I don’t want to hear about how you don’t have time – make time. Oh and by the way, you better start a blog about it all too – the research for it is going to be intensive, so you might as well share it as you go along. And don’t forget, you’ve never written a book before, so you have a TON to learn about writing – you might as well share that stuff as you go along too. Now get to work!”

Boy that writer part of me sure has an attitude… so here I am!

Here’s a little breakdown of what I plan to talk about here on the blog, just to give you a general idea. All is subject to change, and my own whims, of course.

Historical Fiction – I’ve always loved reading it, but now that I want to write it, I am reading it even more. I figure there is no better way to learn than to read what other people have done and take what I can from it. I’ll be doing book reviews, and sharing whatever sites and resources I come across that might appeal to other historical fiction fans.

Writing Fiction – I’m a novel writing newbie, so as I go along I’ll be talking about the ups and downs of writing my first book, and sharing what I learn along the way. This will likely include lots of reviews of, and discussion about, books on writing – my library of them is already off to a great start and I expect it will only grow!

Indie Publishing – My inclination as of now is that I will be publishing the book myself when it is finished. So, I will be dipping my toes in the water of independent publishing – I want to learn how it works, read what is out there that is being published by independent authors, etc. etc.

Coffee Family Ancestry & Genealogy – I want to make sure all the research I do on my Coffee family ancestry gets put out there for other Coffee researchers to find. I am so grateful for everyone who has already done work on it, and have shared what they know! I have to do the same. I’ll likely be talking about genealogy in general too, for those of you out there who have gotten bit by the bug like I have, or think you might want to.

Kentucky History – My book will be set in 18th century Kentucky, and there is a LOT to learn about this fascinating time and place in American History. Believe me, I had very little knowledge of it before I figured out my ancestors played a role in it, but once I started to discover all that was going on back then, I was hooked!

Etc. Etc. Etc. – Because, you know – it’s my blog, I’ll do what I want…

So there you have it - I'm going to write a book! :) I'm fully expecting it to take months, if not years - but I'm on the path now,  so I know I will get it finished eventually. The research involved is fairly overwhelming - but very interesting. Plus it is nice to be trying something completely, 100% NEW - something I haven't really done since I started Vintage Goodness back in 2007. I'll still be here too of course, you won't be rid of me that easily! ;)

I set up a Twitter account that, for now, is going to be my main social media outlet for the new blog - so if you want to, you can head on over there and give me a follow. I'll probably set up a Facebook page closer to the time I am ready to publish the book - honestly, I just don't want to have to mess with yet another page right now when I have so much else going on! I guess if you all show enough interest, I could post on the Vintage Goodness Facebook page when I post things to the new blog - I'll just see how it goes I guess. :)

Dear Santa - My Christmas List

Dear Santa,

How are you? I know you are probably very busy, what with Christmas only 16 days away and all, but I hope you can find time for one more letter! I've been very good this year - I've done all my chores, I've given my best, and I've even been nice to my little brother, only teasing him every once in a while in a moment of weakness.

I have a list of presents that would make me really, really happy - even just two or three of them under the tree on Christmas morning would be more than enough! It's been years since I've written you with a list, actually I think the last time I used the Sears catalog toy section to make it. This time I used eBay - you have an eBay account, don't you?

Under the weather, slow to recover...

Hi everyone, I figured I had better check in since I haven't posted anything lately... I was sick all of last week, with some mysterious bug that had me down for the count, in bed with a fever of 101. My doctor gave me a pill for every possibility, and one of them did the trick - except for my energy level. It is not picking up as quickly as I was hoping... Which means I have gotten next to no work done for 2 weeks now. Which, when you work for yourself, is bad. Very bad.

But, hopefully over the next few days things will get back to normal. I am planning on hitting a few sales tomorrow morning, so hopefully I'll have some fun new stuff to list next week! I think that would help my energy level as much as anything - a bit of excitement always lights a fire under me to get stuff done...

Happy Snow Day!

Hope all of you who are snowed in are having a fun snow day! I snuck a few photos of Will and Shadow out in the snow... the rest are on Facebook. :)

Lunchtime Poll Topic: Downloadable Vintage Related Magazine?

Those of you who are signed up for my newsletter have already seen (and hopefully filled out!) the little poll I created over the weekend - for the rest of you, here's the scoop:

Back when I started this blog what I really wanted to create was an online magazine - here's the post from December 10th, 2007 to prove it. I let the idea die though when I realized the time and work involved in a project like that, and honestly the same issues I had with the idea back then are the same issues I have with it now.

But everyone's reactions to Country Home and several of the other "shelter" magazines going out of business put the idea into my head again - apparently there are a whole lot of folks out there just like me who love magazines! So, I decided to get some opinions from my regular visitors in the form of a little poll - just to gauge the level of interest in the idea.

Here's the poll - it's just a few questions, it will only take a couple of minutes to fill out.

Here's the results so far - if you are curious ;)

Thanks in advance!

PS - Brownie points to everyone who can name the movie my Lunchtime Poll Topic reference is from!

Better Homes & Gardens the replacement for Country Home magazine subscribers... Ugh.

I finally got my final issue of Country Home in the mail today - with this lovely notification:

Better Homes & Gardens? Really? I was happier when I thought I would be getting Traditional Home. BH&G is an ok mag from what little I've seen, but pretty far off from what Country Home was. I'll reserve final judgement until I've gotten a few issues, but let's just say I'm not really looking forward to them.

Thanksgiving

Here are some photos of my family from our Thanksgiving dinner at my parents house - a good time was had by all!:

Left to Right - my uncle, Bob - my Dad, Steve - Mrs. Stratton (my aunt's boyfriend's Mom), my Mom, Mary Jane - my aunt, Joyce (Bob's wife)

My cousin Debbie talking to my cousin Kevin, who wouldn't let me get a picture of his face!

See? Well, at least I tried. That's my cousin Taylor's boyfriend and little baby boy in the background, whatta cutie!

My little brother, Darrell.

My brother's girlfriend, Tonya, who also wouldn't look at the camera - what is it with these people?

Here is Tonya's daughter, Jordan, trying to hide from me.

I found one person who couldn't hide - my aunt Gayla, snoozin in the recliner! hehe

7 Random Things About Me

I've been enjoying the 7 Random Things About Me blog posts that have been popping up around the blogosphere the last few days, but hadn't thought about doing one myself until I read this over at Vintage Indie "Now it's your turn! Consider yourself tagged with 7 Random things about you."

Ok, fine... ;)

1. I've had the same haircut my entire life, with the exception of a couple of bad experiments in the 7th grade. I tried growing my bangs out a couple of years ago, but hated not recognizing myself in the mirror every day.

2. I love watching reality TV. It started with Survivor, which I was devoted to until they did the all-star special a few years ago, which must have felt like an "end" to me, because I haven't watched it since. I don't watch the ones on network TV, just the cable ones - Bravo, VH1 and E. A girl's gotta have standards, right?

3. I eat peanut butter and jelly every day, and could live on it if I had to, as long as I had some coffee to go with it...

4. I have PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome - one of the leading causes of infertility among women. I don't currently take any prescription meds for it, as I would rather control it naturally, but I struggle with "being good" and doing the things I should do (diet, exercise, supplements) for my health.

5. I want to write a book someday.

6. I used to be Wiccan, but now am more of an independently spiritual neo-pagan, if there is such a thing.

7. This is me as a baby - I was a month early, weighed 4 pounds and nearly died. None of those things really explain the alien head, though...

There you have it - 7 random things about Mitzi. I'm going to do to you what Gab did to me though - tag, you're it!

My dirty little secret.

In honor of the PBR 2008 finals that are happening this weekend, I'm coming clean - I love to watch professional bullriding.

There, I said it.

Maybe it's the country girl in me, maybe it's all those tough cowboys in tight wranglers... I don't know, but I watch it whenever I catch it on. Will teases me, but has learned to accept it and doesn't complain when I take over the TV, like I am today... Good luck riders!!

I know this isn't a political blog...

... but I feel the need to interrupt your regularly scheduled vintage love fest with this:

Will and I will be voting for Barack Obama on Tuesday - here's hoping you will too! :)

Exploding Pyrex - Safety Warning

This article was posted on the Etsy Vintage Street Team's forum, and I thought it was important to pass it along.

Corning sold the Pyrex name to a company called World Kitchen in 1998, and the type of glass they use is NOT the same type of glass Corning used - and there are hundreds of reports of pieces exploding in people's hands.

Read the article, and bring out your vintage Pyrex to cook with - this new stuff doesn't seem to be worth the risk!

Friday Night Musical Interlude - Jim Bianco

I got a new CD, and I love it so much I had to share:

I saw Jim Bianco open for Johnette Napolitano (from Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands ever) last October and he won me over completely about 2 songs into his set. Awesome voice, amazing lyrics, and, well, he's pretty darn cute. I talked to him for a couple of minutes after the show, he's a very nice and funny guy - a real character to say the least!

The CD I bought that night, Handsome Devil, has been on heavy rotation since then, and I just got his new release, Sing, and it is equally as good. Painkiller was my favorite song from the live set, and I was super excited that it is on the new disk... Keep up the good work Jim!

I hope you all enjoy, and visit his website to check out more songs and videos!

A little off topic...

I have to share this video the John Edwards camp came out with today, it is priceless!

I am not an overly political person, and this is definitely not a political blog, but I have been supporting JE since the beginning because I think he is the only candidate who can't be bought!

He realizes the sweeping changes that need to be made in Washington, that the system is so flawed that there is no other choice but to get in there and take action. I believe him too - the word "change" is just another sound bite talking point for Hillary & Obama, while they pocket the money from the corporations and lobbyists that will prevent them from making any changes at all!

I am glad he has vowed to stick it out until the end! The race is so close (hello... he BEAT Hillary in Iowa!) I think it is totally unfair that the media has basically written him off. I love this little video they put together, proves the point perfectly!

Uh oh.

Out of curiosity, I just did a search for the .com that would match my eBay name - eclecticvintage - and it is taken. I mean REALLY taken, as in it looks like they have been around for a while, and on eBay long enough to have the .com in their user ID.

It's all rather disconcerting. If I want to move to a more general web presence, I need an identity that can't be confused with someone else. Preferably an identity that ties in with my eBay identity. So, it looks like the only option is to change my eBay ID, which just really sucks - I have spent so much time creating my identity there around that ID.

*sigh*

At least I don't have business cards printed up yet.
