Featured Collectible - Vintage Shooting Targets

I have a new mini obsession - vintage shooting targets. While I'm not really into guns, the graphic impact and slightly creepy aura of these is a combination I can't resist! Some of them are just begging to be framed and hung as a group...

(This big pack of 100 targets is especially tempting - that's enough to paper a wall, or to do something else super crafty with...)

If these are a little too creepy for you, check out some of the shooting gallery targets and toy and game targets that are out there - they are equally as cool, and often a lot more colorful:

What do you think? Am I way out in left field thinking these are something to decorate your home with? Or can you share my vision?

The Photography Of Vivian Maier

This story is every junker's dream - a trip to an auction that ends in the score of a lifetime - literally. John Maloof, who was working on a book about Chicago, bought a lot of photo negatives that came from a delinquent storage unit. They turned out to be a lifetime's worth of work - over 100,000 images - of an amateur street photographer named Vivian Maier.

Since his discovery, he has put in countless hours and a big chunk of his own money processing her work. It has to be an overwhelming responsibility - but what treasure hunter among us wouldn't love to have been the one to make this discovery? It's mind boggling.

He has an account set up on Kickstarter to take donations for a book and documentary that he is working on about Vivian's life and work. I can't wait for both!

Cash & Cari Premiers Monday + HGTV Swag Giveaway!

The good folks at HGTV contacted me to let me know about the Monday, January 3rd premier of their new junking show, Cash & Cari. I took one look at the site and thought "Now HERE we go!" - this is much closer to what us online vintage dealers do than any of the other shows that are currently on TV. Finally!! Here is the brief synopsis:

Cash & Cari

Whether it's a vintage Chanel gown left behind in a disused dry cleaners, or a limited-edition pink vinyl copy of Michael Jackson's Thriller, or a Capo di Monte porcelain statuette, antiques dealer extraordinaire Cari Cucksey is always on the lookout for the undiscovered diamond in the rough. Cari travels the country to estate sales, flea markets, attics, garages and anywhere else that peaks her interest in search of obscure pieces to restore or flip for profit. Premieres Monday, January 3 at 10/9c on HGTV.

From the Scripps Network I found this bio of Cari:

Cucksey is the owner/operator of two businesses located near Detroit Michigan -- RePurpose Estate Services and her new retail RePurpose shop that sells antiques, items on consignment and her fabulous finds along with designer and vintage clothing and accessories. She has over 10 years experience as an estate liquidator.

Oh yeah. I think this might be good! :)

Giveaway!

To help promote the show, HGTV is offering some sweet HGTV Swag to one lucky reader of this here little blog! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post between now and next Friday, January 7th at midnight. Here is what is included:

·         (1) HGTV Red Can Koozie
·         (1) HGTV Ocean Blue Mug
·         (1) HGTV Canvas Visor
·         (1) HGTV Multi-Colored Roll-Up Tote

You know I'll be on the couch ready to go at 10 PM EST on Monday! Until then here is a video preview - and don't forget to leave a comment (with a way to contact you if you win!) if you want to be in the running for the giveaway... :)

Oddities on Discovery - Creepy Vintage Goodness

Last week I stumbled across a really great show on Discovery called Oddities. It is about a shop in New York called Obscura, that deals in antiques - but not your average, pretty things or fun, mod things - they are more into old taxidermy, bones, scary antique medical equipment, and other weirdness.

It normally airs at 10:30pm EST on Thursdays. Sadly, Discovery doesn't post full episodes on their website (unlike A&E, which lets me get my Hoarders fix whenever I want, and let me have my own mini marathon of the new storage unit auction show Storage Wars the other day, which I really enjoyed).

Luckily, they are running a marathon of Oddities this morning from 9am EST to 1pm EST - it looks like they are playing all 6 episodes that have aired so far, so it's a great chance to catch up on what I've missed!

Dear Santa - My Christmas List

Dear Santa,

How are you? I know you are probably very busy, what with Christmas only 16 days away and all, but I hope you can find time for one more letter! I've been very good this year - I've done all my chores, I've given my best, and I've even been nice to my little brother, only teasing him every once in a while in a moment of weakness.

I have a list of presents that would make me really, really happy - even just two or three of them under the tree on Christmas morning would be more than enough! It's been years since I've written you with a list, actually I think the last time I used the Sears catalog toy section to make it. This time I used eBay - you have an eBay account, don't you?

New goodness on eBay this week!

I can't wait to show you what we got listed this week - especially this!:

Yes, I said MINT - and I almost never say that. But, I got an entire set of these that were in their original box - and their former owner said as far as he knew, they were put away in the attic back in the 60's (wedding gift) and were never used.

If you collect Cathay, now's your chance - you can fill in missing pieces, upgrade from just OK to minty minty, or start a new collection off on the right foot! This is one of my favorite patterns, let me tell you it is VERY hard to part with!

I also scored a big set of Hartstone Pottery dishes, the pattern is Emerald Jewel Tones - it is a green spongeware type design, and it is discontinued. So pretty, and super heavy duty!

I am very happy to report that I only have 2 winter coats left waiting to be listed! Here's my favorite coat I have up for auction right now - click on over if you want to see them all, I have a variety of sizes, including plus sizes! :)

Dealing with all that dinnerware and the stash of winter coats took a bit of time, but we did manage to list some other goodies too, here's a few of my favorites, click on over if you want to see the rest

Auction Hunters - Premiers Tuesday, Nov. 9th at 10pm on SPIKE!

I was so excited to be contacted by the folks from the new show Auction Hunters about doing a sponsored post to help get the word out about the show's premier - which is coming up this Tuesday, November 9th, at 10:00 PM on Spike! It looks like a really fun show, and having another "junk hunk" on TV definitely isn't going to hurt, is it? ;)

Here is a brief intro to the show, and a couple of video clips so you can see what it is all about...

Every day in America, there are over ten thousand abandoned storage units that are put up for public auction. Each unit has the potential to be a goldmine or a bust for those who make their living hunting unclaimed property. This eight half-hour episode series follows two of the best prospectors in the business, Clinton "Ton" Jones and Allen Haff, in their quest to win auctions, acquire treasure and sell it for profit.

I'll definitely be on my couch on Tuesday night - I can't wait to see what kind of treasures they find!
