Vintage Decorating - 1950's Paint Color Chip Brochures
I was digging through the basement at an estate sale a while back, and found a manilla envelope full of vintage paint chip brochures - you gotta love the folks who never throw anything away! A couple of them are dated 1957, so I'm assuming they are all from around that time... Before I list them I figured I should scan in the chips to post here - they might be helpful to those folks who are retro renovating, and looking for authentic paint colors. Featured Collectible - Louisa May Alcott's Little Women
I love, love, love Little Women! I know I am not alone in this - the book is a true classic, as are the movies (yes, I love all of them too - even the Winona Ryder one!). I found a copy from 1922 at an estate sale a few months ago, sadly it was literally falling apart, but I was able to save some of the amazing full page color illustrations by artist Jessie Wilcox Smith:
I listed them in my Etsy shop the other day (7 pages total), and it got me to thinking about what all might be out there in the way of collectibles for fans of the books and movies. Turns out, there is quite a lot!
First of all are the books, of course. The original book was published in two parts, in 1868 and 1869. There is a listing right now on eBay for signed first editions of both parts, plus a first edition of Little Men - check out the asking price:

That would be a nice little something to stumble across at an estate sale someday! Of course there are TONS of later editions out there, so if you want a book there is probably one out there in your price range. (Or, you could collect illustrations from damaged books, like the ones I listed - they would be so sweet framed or kept in a scrapbook!)

If I remember right it was abridged, I know when I read another edition later on there was stuff in it that I didn't remember. I haven't gone to see if my first copy is still hidden somewhere in my parent's house to compare the two though...
And then there are the movies... There are three full length feature films - the 1933 one with Katherine Hepburn, the 1949 one with June Allyson and Elizabeth Taylor (this one is probably my favorite, though I do like them all!), and the 1994 one with Winona Ryder. There are also several TV specials and series, so definitely plenty to watch if you need a Little Women fix!
Of course if you are a fan of the book and movies, you might be of the mind to score some Little Women collectibles - and there are TONS. Vintage Glass Genie Bottle Decanter SUPER Score!
Remember a few weeks back when I did a Featured Collectible post about vintage glass "genie bottle" style decanters? I mentioned I had only found one out at the sales before (I lied, I've actually found two, but the stopper and top were broken on one of them - obscured by tape when I bought it, curses! - Will is going to try to glue it into presentable shape so we can keep it, wish him luck, he needs it...).
Well, luck was with me this last weekend at a HUGE estate sale - I managed to come home with SIX bottles! I was able to buy 3 of them the first day, then had to wait til the final (half off) day to pick up the other 3 - but it was SO worth it... Aren't they amazing? Hopefully I will get them all listed this week! :)

New goodness at auction on eBay this week - bring on the comic strip books!
A couple months ago I bought an entire collection of vintage comic strip books at an estate sale. It was one of those, "Hey, if no one buys these, will you cut me a deal if I come back at the end of the sale and get them ALL?" type deals. Needless to say, no one bought them, so I cleaned the place out.
Fast forward to this week, I finally decided I was tired of looking at the pile. If you've ever dealt with a bunch of books (or magazines) you know it can be a pretty time consuming ordeal - sorting, checking out condition, etc. etc. I had decided when I bought them that I would list them all in lots, so at least I didn't have to spend a bunch of time worrying about pulling books out to list individually...
The best of all the books, in my humble opinion, are the 14 Calvin & Hobbes books - that is just 3 books shy of a complete set (not including the deluxe boxed set). You might remember, I spent a LONG time thrifting myself a complete collection, book by book... So believe me I was super excited when I found this many all in one shot. They are all in great shape too - I was definitely tempted to keep a few, to replace my copies that aren't in as good of condition. But, I decided to go ahead and list them all for someone else to score... You're welcome. :)
The other ones I was tempted to keep were the older Peanuts copies - I really dig the early style a lot more than the later - the kids, and Snoopy, are younger, and I don't know, just sweeter I guess:

Vintage knee hugger elves for Elf on the Shelf!
People come up with really creative ideas - I surfed around Pinterest the other day and collected some fun ones - click on over if you want to see Mr. Elf in action!
It really seems like the demand for, and selling prices of, vintage knee hugger elves has gone up this year. I can only conclude it is the popularity of Elf On The Shelf that is behind it - maybe parents want different kinds of elves to use, or to make Elf On The Shelf parties? I don't know. The official Elf on the Shelf certainly looks a lot like the vintage versions, so I can see why people would be looking to give him some friends that are similar but not exactly the same...
Here are some great vintage knee hugger elves I found that are up on eBay right now, any - or all! - of them would be perfect to use with Elf on the Shelf, or just to give a bit of extra cuteness to a retro styled Christmas...
